Hints and Tips for Feeding Huskies, Malamutes and Sled Dogs

Food and Water Bowls

As far as food bowls go, there is no need to spend too much money. We use simple stainless steel bowls to feed our huskies, which we wash after each meal.

Fast Eaters

Huskies, malamutes and other sled dogs are often particularly greedy when it comes to food, and may 'wolf' their meals down very quickly.
This is not ideal, and can lead to health problems, including Bloat.
One possible solution for those who feed kibble is to scatter the biscuits over a large surface, for instance a large plastic tray. This way the dog has to 'collect' each piece of kibble, which naturally slows them down. You can take your time and add the biscuits slowly over a couple of minutes to slow the dog further.

Products are available to help with the problem of fast eaters, such as feeding bowls with built-in obstructions that the dog has to eat around to reach its food.

Try the brake-fast bowl or the Skid Stop Slow Feed Bowl, which has built-in obstructions, as well as rubber feet to stop it skidding around the floor as your dog eats.

Older Dogs

Most dog food manufacturers produce a 'Senior' range for older dogs, whose nutritional requirements change as their activity levels decrease. Innova Senior suits our own 'oldies' well.

Older dogs may be restricted in their movement, or simply not as flexible as they once were. You can help them at mealtimes by raising the height of their food bowls so as to reduce the demand on their back, neck and shoulders. Raised feeing bowls are available to purchase, or you can construct a simple feeding bench at an appropriate height for your dog.

Travel and Feeding

It is a good idea to pick up a collapsible travel water bowl for feeding your husky or sled dog while out and about.
